Experimentation
Experimentation to me is about pushing conventions and boundaries, actively disobeying the prescribed ‘norm’ and exploring new territory. It is a journey of trial and error and error and error and error and often success does not lie at the end of the road, but that is part of the beauty of it, it’s an overtly imperfect concept much like life itself. It relates to sound arts in terms of exploring new sonic landscapes without having to adhere to the limitations of genre or structure. I want to discover new textures and assemble them in contexts that feel fresh to me. Making time for experimentation ensures I keep my creative momentum and always allow room for new ideas.
Sound Design
Sound design is a subject I am very passionate about. for me it’s where the conceptual and practical intersect. There’s something I find really beautiful about making something with intention and purpose from basic waveforms, sculpting them and gradually watching the process become more refined as a direction curves itself. I also enjoy how experimentation and sound design intersect for me, I love finding novel ways to use software I thought I was familiar with, and finding new areas to explore just through thinking ‘I wonder what would happen if I did this?’
Immersion
Immersion to me is about mastery of cohesion, making pieces that completely wrap the listener in a meditative sonic blanket where there is (if listened to attentively) not space for thought, criticism, or distraction. I guess part of this for me comes from my ADHD and often inability to stay focused. One thing that can consistently hold my attention is sound, just allowing my brain to interface with the sonic textures I am presented with. Another element of immersion I enjoy exploring is visualisation, imagining how the space the music occupies in the imagination could look, smell, what characters occupy it, what physical textures would I feel if I was able to interact with the imagined world.
