Thinking about temporality and space in 8 channel speaker setups

I’ve been thinking about possibilities I can explore with use of the multi channel speaker setup I have access to in M108, and I think it could be interesting to create a piece exploring focus, time, and space. elements of this could include: somewhat unpredictable syncopated rhythms accompanied accented by movements in the 3d field, fluctuating tempos and time signatures, and interesting 3d movements using GRM spaces.

As the piece starts I want to encourage the listener into a comfortable stationary position, and as it progresses I want to gradually encourage them to move around and try to find ‘balanced areas of the room. some techniques to centre them in place could be centring sounds around a ‘sweet spot, with stereo effects that can only be experienced properly in a particular area. it would also be interesting to play with the idea of physical space, such as having sounds changing in ‘height’, and making use of the doppler effect.

In terms of sound palette, I would like the piece to mostly consist of small percussive snippets, which play evolving syncopated rhythms. I think a second more spacious continuous sound could also be effective, and this can evolve in terms of its placement in the stereo field. I think it would be interesting to have it split into different signals, which play in their own ranges of the frequency spectrum through EQing. I think it would be interesting to have particular percussive sounds serve as triggers which result in changes in this sound.
