For the research project proposal I’ve chosen Route B, the Audio Paper, mainly because I personally find it a more interesting format to work in than a written dissertation, as well as to consume. Making the critical argument through sound rather than just writing about it feels reflective of what the practice actually is.
That said, I’m not sure this noise doomscrolling project is what I’ll take into third year. What I originally wanted to write this essay about was sonic worldbuilding, I’m fascinated by how sound can function as a medium for conveying imaginary environments and biomes in a way that other art forms can’t quite replicate. I didn’t give myself enough time to do that topic justice this time around, but it’s what I keep coming back to. I’m planning my first EP release around a worldbuilding concept, and I want the research project to feed directly into that. The Audio Paper format feels like the right vehicle for this, the argument and the sound world can develop together rather than separately, immersing the listener in an imaginary world consisting of sound.
