After the first meeting, Mani and I kept exchanging references over Instagram. The haetae concept from their Miro board, a creature as a boundary guardian sitting between protection and control, was of interest to me, so I started doing my own reading on it alongside exploring sounds that could represent this. The group also mentioned that it would be cool to make the video reminiscent of a videogame, so I downloaded some sample banks from games I like to use as material.
One connection I thought could be cool to include was the character Midna from one of my favourite games of my childhood, Zelda Twilight Princess. The dynamic between Midna and Link mapped interestingly onto the haetae concept the CSM group had developed. I downloaded some samples from the game and incorporated them into a sketch, and sent this across to the group. they were receptive to it and liked the samples included, but said they preferred more rave music arrangement, end encouraged me to make a heavier track, while still using the samples.
I also downloaded samples from Dark Souls, specifically for how its audio conveys mythological scale and decayed grandeur. Some of the sound effects like the sound when you arrive at a new area use extremely low register and long reverb tails to place you inside something vast and ancient. That felt relevant to the threshold-guardian quality of the haetae concept. The chord stab of this ‘new area’ sound also has a desperate melancholy sound to it, which I resonate with.
