WeSee/WeMove Brief

During the project I checked the brief the CSM group were working to, the WeSee/WeMove project for their unit. Reading through it helped me understand the scope of what the group were making, beyond what had come up in our conversations.

The central prompt for the CSM students was “What does the world need, NOW?”, which each group would be interpreting through their own lens. In Mani’s group’s case, that had led to the haetae theme, the simulation/hyperreality themes, and the other conceptual material I’d seen on the Miro board. Seeing the brief confirmed that the thematic direction came entirely from them; my role was to respond to it sonically rather than co-author it.

A few specifics in the brief were directly relevant to my work. The sound component was framed as a creative contribution to be woven into the performance rather than just a backing track. The brief also specified that the track could be edited, subverted, interrupted or added to by the CSM group, which gave me a clearer sense of how the audio might actually be used and how much I should design for flexibility rather than a fixed playback scenario.

The costume brief (wearable art made from found and waste materials, designed to enhance, restrict or hinder movement) also gave me a clearer picture of the visual register and physical quality of the piece, which fed back into thinking about the texture and weight of the sound.
